Gambar

In mid-March, when United States President Donald Trump declared a national emergency and the coronavirus has infected people in all 50 states, many white-collar Americans began working from home. According to a survey by analytics and advisory company Gallup, on March 13 at the beginning of U.S. stay-at-home orders, 31 percent of employees in the nation were working remotely. By the end of the month, that number had doubled to 62 percent. With an unprecedented amount of time spent in their domestic spaces, Americans also began shopping to redecorate them. Wesley Chapel man calls for action after landing on floor while working from home

Gambar
PASCO COUNTY — WESLEY CHAPEL, Fla. -- A Wesley Chapel man made a call for action to Consumer Reporter Jackie Callaway after he said his transition to remotely working from home hit a rough patch over problems with a faulty piece of office furniture. IT worker Chris Kelley told ABC Action News he literally hit the floor after his office chair fell apart. "When it popped, I immediately – to keep from falling backward – I lifted up on the seat and when I did, the seat came completely apart," said Kelley. Kelley told ABC Action News the chair was part of a large, three-piece office set he bought from Costco more than a year ago and he said the furniture was still under warranty. Kelley said he requested Costco replace just the chair, but the company responded in emails Kelley shared with ABC Action News that he would have to take apart the entire office set and set it out by the curb for Costco to pick up. "They wanted me to take the whole thing back," said Kelley. ...

Does That IKEA Furniture You Just Bought Need to Be Anchored? Here’s How to Tell

Gambar
Many of us understand the basics of childproofing our homes. We know to lock up potentially poisonous chemicals and to keep electrical outlets covered. Perhaps we've even ridded our homes of candles, and switched to exclusively using the backburner of our stoves (where our children are less likely to reach for a piping hot pot). But even the most vigilant among us may not realize that the heavy pieces of furniture filling our homes can be just as dangerous as the cleaning products hiding underneath our sinks. Every 20 minutes, someone in the U.S. is injured due to an appliance, TV or piece of furniture falling over, according to Consumer Reports. It's for this reason that anchoring your furniture to prevent tip-overs is one of the most fundamental steps you can take in rendering your home a little safer. Tip-overs happen for a number of reasons, but they're often the result of people using furniture in a way it wasn't intended to be used. "The center of gr...

NoCo Real Estate Summit: Water drives home prices but can be controlled

Gambar
Builders of new homes in Northern Colorado spend more than $236,000 per acre to bring water to their developments. Land prices, in comparison, are about $40,000 per acre. Buyers of new homes will spend about 10% of their purchase price on water alone. Water and development experts say that the escalating price of water — now $62,500 per share of Colorado Big Thompson water — continues to push home prices into unaffordable ranges, particularly for first-time home buyers and those in service-related professions. Water as a price driver along the northern Front Range was the lead-off topic at the Northern Colorado Real Estate Summit, a virtual event this year hosted by BizWest. Reagan Waskom, director of the Colorado Water Center at Colorado State University, moderated a panel discussion that included a home developer, a water attorney, a landscape design expert and a water engineering consultant. The takeaway from their discussion: Water helps drive the escalating costs and ava...

Why At Home Stock Surged Today

Gambar
What happened Shares of At Home (NYSE:HOME) surged today, finishing up 13.5% after a Wall Street analyst released a bullish research note on home-furnishing retailers. Separately, investors were also encouraged by fresh retail sales data released by the Commerce Department. So what Jefferies boosted its price targets on numerous home improvement and home-furnishing companies, including Lowe's, Home Depot, and Wayfair. The firm believes that the broad shift to remote work that COVID-19 is spurring may translate into a large number of people moving from urban cities to suburban areas, boosting homeownership in 2021. Those new homeowners are then expected to start buying more products to furnish those homes, particularly as homeowners tend to spend more on big-ticket purchases like appliances tha...

Gambar
The coronavirus pandemic has massive implications for this year's tax season. Work expenses in particular have been flipped on their head, with many workers required to work from home since March or April. More people could be working from home postpandemic

Gambar
The Covid-19 pandemic is not only changing the configuration of offices as employers seek to safeguard the health of their workers, it is also raising questions about the long-term place of the office in commerce. The virus outbreak has forced entire employee populations to work from home. And as workers settle into that rhythm, it is uncertain how many will actually need to report to the office five days a week after a coronavirus vaccine is found. Jeff Ziplow, a partner at an accounting and consulting firm, said the pandemic is almost certain to accelerate telecommuting, already enjoying increased acceptance for all or portions of a work week. "There is going to be a place for an office, but it's going to be a lot smaller," Ziplow said. "We can be looking at different ways to transact business. Many organisations are going to rethink: 'Do I really need this amount of off...

COVID-19 nearly killed this office furniture startup; turning to home offices may save it

Gambar
A lot of U.S.companies have had near-death experiences in recent months. Among them is Branch, a 1.5-year-old, venture-backed New York-based startup that sells what it calls "exceptional office furniture, at half the price" -- and which nearly went kaput because of the pandemic. After generating roughly $800,000 in revenue in the first weeks of March, that number promptly fell to zero as people were asked to leave their offices and head home. A small layoff at Branch followed -- its 11-person team shrank to eight people -- along with some panic. Instead of throw in the towel, the startup retooled itself to sell home office furniture to the many employees who are now working from home and receiving a stipend to update their set-up. The decision might just save the business. According to co-founder and CEO Greg Hayes, Branch is now selling directly to individuals, as well as working with Google, Shopify and other companies to outfit home offices for employees who may never work...
